The Bag In The CupboardHaggai 2:4

The Chair Is Under A Sheet In The Garage

This message is for the reader with a chair he cut every piece for and never assembled, standing under a dust sheet in the garage where he walks past it twice a day

You know the shape of it through the sheet.

You could draw it from memory. The back legs leaning against the wall, the seat blank on top of the bench, the four rails you cut in one good Saturday when it was all going to work out. There is a fine gray dust on the sheet now, which tells you exactly how long it has been.

And you walk past it. Twice a day, most days. Out to the car, back from the car, and there it is under the sheet, and you have got very good at not turning your head.

Here is what I want to say first, because everything else sits on top of it.

That is not a failed chair. Every piece of it is cut. The joints are marked. Somebody who knew nothing about you would walk in, lift the sheet, and say, well, this is nearly a chair.

It is only in your house that it means something else.

Somewhere along the way it stopped being wood on a bench and became a small standing statement about the kind of man you turned out to be. Starts things. Does not finish them. And the sheet does not hide it from you, because a sheet is a very loud thing when you know what is underneath.

So you leave it. And leaving it makes the statement truer. That is the trap, and it is a good one, and you did not build it on purpose.

I come from people who fed strangers before they asked their names. In my grandfather's house you did not apologize for the state of the kitchen before you served the bread. You served the bread. I want to do that here. I am not going to make you explain the dust before we begin.

The Chair Is Under A Sheet In The Garage

There was a half built house of God standing in the open for years

There is a moment in Haggai that I do not think gets told often enough.

The foundation of the temple was laid. Then the work stopped. Not for a week. For roughly sixteen years the thing stood there, part built, in the open, while everybody who walked past it saw exactly how far it had got and exactly where it had halted.

And when God finally speaks to them about it, listen to what He does not say.

Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, saith the LORD; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith the LORD, and work: for I am with you, saith the LORD of hosts. (Haggai 2:4, King James Version)

No inquiry. No account of the sixteen years. No sentence beginning with "why did you". He says be strong, and work, and I am with you.

You are standing in front of a work God has already spoken over, and not one question about the years has ever been put to you. Haggai 2:4 opens on be strong and closes on I am with you with no audit anywhere between them, and the Holy Spirit is the one making that ancient sentence land on a garage in your street tonight.

I want you to feel the size of that. God had every right to open with the delay. He opened with His own presence instead.

You have His company at that bench already, and it was settled there long before you put a hand on the wood. His Spirit is the one who carries a promise made over rubble across two and a half thousand years, and Haggai 2:4 is where that promise is written down.

He said work. He did not say finish

Read the instruction again, because the word that is missing from it matters more than the words in it.

Work. Not complete. Not deliver. Not have it done by. The command God gave a nation standing in front of a half built temple was one syllable long, and it was about starting the hands moving, not about the roof going on.

This is where every encouragement offered before now has quietly failed. Somebody says, you should really finish that chair. And your mind hears the whole distance at once. The seat, the glue up, the sanding, the finish, the evening you do not have, and the very real possibility that the joints have moved and the whole thing was wrong from the start. So you say yes, definitely, and you walk past it twice more tomorrow.

You were never asked for a finished chair, and the word standing over you tonight is the one Haggai got, which is work. The written command in Haggai 2:4 is to work and not to finish, and the Spirit of God takes that one distinction and quietly lifts about forty pounds off a man's shoulders with it.

You are able to go out there and do twenty minutes on one joint, and heaven calls that a real obedience rather than a token one. His Spirit is standing at your elbow in a cold garage, and it is Haggai 2:4 that puts strength and work in the same breath without ever naming a completion date.

And there is something else. Do not go and start a different project.

You have permission to go back to the exact thing that stopped, and this is yours to resume rather than to replace. It is written in Haggai 2:4 that they were sent back to the foundation already laid rather than to a new site, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes returning possible for a man who only knows how to begin again.

Twenty minutes, and it can be rough

So here is what I am asking, and it is smaller than you think.

Go out tonight. Pull the sheet off. Do not fold it neatly, do not clean the bench, do not assess whether the joints have moved over the winter. Put your hands on the piece that stopped and work on it for twenty minutes.

It will be rough. Your hands have forgotten the feel of it, the light out there is bad, and whatever you do in those twenty minutes may well need doing again. None of that is a problem. All of it is the work.

You are not on your own in twenty rough minutes in a cold garage, and it is already settled that His presence goes ahead of the work. I am with you sits in the same written sentence as the instruction in Haggai 2:4, and the Holy Spirit is the one who puts that order beyond argument.

Then put the sheet back on if you want. Or leave it off. That part is not part of this.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man who knows the exact shape of that chair through the sheet.

You are not a man who does not finish things, and that chair under the sheet has never once been the evidence you have turned it into. I am not promising you a finished chair and I will not. Haggai 2:4 says be strong and work, for I am with you, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my opinion who takes a sixteen year silence and calls it done rather than calling it a case.

You have no account outstanding for the years that chair has stood there, because the God who spoke over a half built temple opened with His presence and not with the delay. The Spirit of God refuses to raise what Scripture chose to leave out, and Haggai 2:4 never once mentions the lost time.

And this, which is the word I came out here with.

You are able to pull that sheet off tonight, and it has never been a verdict, it is four rails and a seat and a Saturday you once wanted. Haggai 2:4 puts the command and the companionship in one sentence, and His Spirit is saying it now, over a bench, in a garage, in your own handwriting on the wood.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Chair under the sheet, you are not a verdict on me. Haggai 2:4 says be strong, and work, for I am with you, so by the Holy Spirit I take the sheet off tonight and I do twenty minutes in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear that the joints have moved, you do not get to keep me out of that garage. Haggai 2:4 sent builders back to a foundation that had stood open to the road for sixteen years, and by the Spirit of God I am going back tonight to the piece that stopped.
  3. Father, You spoke over a half built house and never once mentioned the years it stood there. Your word says be strong, and work, for I am with you, so by Your Spirit I work tonight, and I do not finish it, and You call that obedience.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
