There Is A Half Finished Thing In A Bag

You know exactly where it is.

Top of the cupboard, or the bottom of the wardrobe, or behind the thing you have to move to get to it. And you know what is in it, roughly, and you know how far you got, and you have not opened it in a long time.

And here is the odd part, the part I want to start with. It is not a difficult object. It is a bag with some wool in it, or some paper, or a piece of wood and a tool. There is nothing in that bag that can do anything to you.

But you cannot look at it.

Because at some point it stopped being an unfinished thing and became a statement about you. It became the proof that you start things and do not finish them, sitting in a cupboard, and every time you catch sight of it you get a small reminder of a case against yourself that you have already decided is proven.

So you leave it there. And leaving it there adds to the case. That is the loop.

I want to take one thing off you before we go anywhere. You did not abandon that. You put it down. Something was happening in your life and your hands were needed elsewhere, and you put it down the way a person puts down a cup, meaning to come back, and then the coming back got further away.

Putting a thing down is not a character flaw. It is what happens when a life gets heavy.

A bruised reed shall he not break

There is a line in Isaiah describing how the Servant handles what is already damaged.

A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth. (Isaiah 42:3, King James Version)

A bruised reed shall he not break. The smoking flax shall he not quench.

Both of those are pictures of something that has not worked out. A reed that is bent is no use as a reed. Flax that is only smoking has failed to catch; it is the wick that did not become a flame, and the ordinary thing to do with it is pinch it out and start with a new one.

And the sentence says He does neither.

He does not finish off the bent one. He does not put out the one that never quite caught. He is described, deliberately, by how He handles the thing that stopped part way, and He handles it with care rather than with a verdict.

You have been treating that bag the way a person treats smoking flax. Pinch it out, it did not take, do not look at it. He is not doing that with you and He is not doing it with the thing in your hands either.

You are held by someone who does not put out what is only smoking, and it has never once been His way to finish off what has stalled. Isaiah 42:3 refuses to break the bruised reed or quench the smoking flax, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a description of how you are being handled rather than a nice line about somebody else.

And notice what the verse does not do. It does not assess the reed. It does not ask how the flax came to be smoking rather than burning. The state of the thing is where He starts, and that is all.

You have a God who begins at the place a thing stopped, and it is already settled that no account of the stopping was ever required. The written word gives none in Isaiah 42:3, and the Spirit of God is the one who refuses to raise what Scripture chose to leave out.

Do not start something new

Here is where I think most encouragement about this goes wrong, and it is why nothing has helped so far.

The instinct is to say: get something fresh. New wool, a clean page, a different project, no history on it. And that feels lighter for about a day, and then there are two unfinished things in the house instead of one, and the case gets stronger rather than weaker.

The state of that bag is not a measure of you, and neither is the number of rows in it.

You are held by the same care that keeps a bent reed, and Isaiah 42:3 makes that a description of how God handles what stopped rather than a comment on what it was worth. The Holy Spirit is the one who applies it to wool and a needle in a cupboard.

Do not start something new. Open that bag.

Because the whole weight of this is not in the making. It is in the story that you do not finish things, and a new project cannot touch that story. Only the old one can. Ten minutes on the thing that stopped does something no fresh start can do: it makes the stopping temporary, retrospectively, and the case falls apart.

And there is no requirement to finish it. I want to be clear, because the mind has already jumped ahead to whether it could be finished, and the answer to that question is not the point. Ten minutes on it is the whole of what I am asking.

You are free of the finishing tonight, and this is yours: Isaiah 42:3 describes a God who keeps what is bent rather than one who completes it. His Spirit is the one who holds that difference steady while a person reaches into a cupboard.

You are able to pick up the exact thing that stopped, and it has never once required you to finish it to be worth picking up. The written word says He will not quench the smoking flax, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes resuming possible for somebody who has only ever known starting over.

Ten minutes, and it stays imperfect

So here is the assignment.

Take the bag out of the cupboard. Open it. Do ten minutes.

The urge will be to assess it first. To work out how far off it is, whether the tension changed, whether any of it can still be remembered. Do not. Open it and put your hands on it and do ten minutes of whatever you can work out, and if the ten minutes is bad, that is fine, and if you undo it next week, that is fine too.

Then put it back in the bag. It does not have to go back in the cupboard, and it does not have to stay out. That is not part of this.

Isaiah 42:3 says a bruised reed shall he not break, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present in ten awkward minutes with a thing a person has been avoiding for years.

You are able to give this ten minutes tonight, and heaven has never once required the ten minutes to be any good. Isaiah 42:3 keeps the bent reed and the smoking flax rather than replacing them, and the Spirit of God is the one who steadies the hands of somebody picking up an old thing.
