Making After A Loss2 Timothy 1:5

I Make Her Things And I Make Them Badly

This message is for the reader making the things his mother used to make, getting them wrong every time, and unable to decide whether the wrongness is the point or an insult to her

The pastry is wrong. It has been wrong eleven times.

Not inedible. Wrong. It does not do the thing hers did, which nobody in the family has ever described in words and everybody would recognize instantly.

And you have made it eleven times since she died, and it has been closer twice and further away nine times, and last week it was so far off that you stood at the counter and looked at it and could not decide what you were feeling.

Here is the question you have been going round on, and I think it has been going round for months.

Is the getting it wrong an insult to her, or is it the point?

Because those two are very different. If it is an insult, then every attempt is a small failure of respect and you should either learn it properly or stop. If it is the point, then the wrongness is somehow the whole of what you are doing out there, and every failed pastry is a success in some way you cannot explain to anybody at the table.

And you cannot tell. And not being able to tell is what makes you stand at the counter.

I come from a kitchen. My grandmother's, and then my mother's, and I have watched a lot of grief happen over a stove and I want to say something about it before we go to the word.

Neither of those two answers is the right one.

Getting it wrong is not an insult and it is not a tribute. It is the ordinary, unavoidable result of a man who watched somebody do a thing for forty years without being taught it, now doing it. That is arithmetic, not meaning.

I Make Her Things And I Make Them Badly

Which dwelt first in thy grandmother

There is a sentence Paul writes to Timothy about where his faith came from, and the way he traces it is the thing I want.

When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also. (2 Timothy 1:5, King James Version)

Which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice.

Two women named. Not as a comparison, and not as a standard Timothy is expected to reach. Named as the place where the thing lived before it lived in him.

And then the last clause. I am persuaded that in thee also. Also, not equally. The word does not measure. It only says the same thing is present.

You are carrying something that lived in her first, and 2 Timothy 1:5 names the line without grading anybody on it. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes a line from a letter about faith and lays it down in a kitchen with the eleventh attempt cooling on the counter.

And notice what is not there. Paul does not say Timothy has it as strongly. He does not say the grandmother's version was better. He traces it and stops.

You have a thing that came down through her without any comparison attached, and it is already settled in the written word that the tracing was not a ranking. His Spirit is the one who says that over a man who has been marking his own pastry against a dead woman's.

The wrongness is not the message

Now let me deal with the question directly, because leaving it open is not the same as ignoring it.

The deciding has been going on for months, and there is a reason it will not settle. It does not mean anything. It is a fact about how hands learn.

She had forty years. There have been eleven attempts. There is no version of this world where the eleventh comes out like the ten thousandth, and if it did, that would be the strange event, not this.

You are carrying something that came down a line, and 2 Timothy 1:5 traces it through two women and says in thee also without one word of comparison. The Holy Spirit is the one who lets also mean also rather than equally.

So the wrongness is not an insult, and it is also not the sacred heart of the thing. It is where an eleventh attempt sits.

What makes the eleventh attempt worth something is not its quality. It is that a man stood in a kitchen and did the thing again. That is the part with weight in it.

And this: how close the pastry gets is not a measure of what she was to you. There is nothing in the sight of God that reads a man's love off a texture.

You are not being measured by any of this, and heaven has never once assessed a son by how near he got to his mother's hands. 2 Timothy 1:5 traces a thing down a line without one comparison in the sentence, and the Spirit of God is the one who refuses to grade a kitchen.

And do not go and find the recipe written down somewhere and follow it exactly. If a card exists, fine, use it. But do not go hunting for a method that will end the wrongness, because ending the wrongness is not the same as being close to her.

You have permission to keep getting it wrong, and this is yours: the thing that came down the line came without a standard attached. It is written in 2 Timothy 1:5 that it dwelt first in the women and then in him also, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets also mean also.

Twenty minutes, and leave it wrong

So here is the ask.

This week, make one of her things. Whichever one. Twenty minutes of actual work, and it does not have to be the pastry if the pastry has become too loaded.

Get it wrong. You will anyway, but I want it said out loud so it is not a disappointment when it happens.

You are permitted to get it wrong again, and 2 Timothy 1:5 traces the thing down a family line without grading one hand it passed through. The Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a kitchen from turning into a courtroom.

And do not correct it. Do not adjust halfway through when you feel it going. Do not do a second one straight after to try to get closer. One attempt, wrong, finished.

Then eat it, or give it to somebody in the house, or put it out on the table. Do not throw it away because it did not come out.

You are steadied at that counter while it goes wrong again, and 2 Timothy 1:5 is the ground under that. The written word traces a thing down a family line without a single comparison in it, and the Spirit of God is present in a kitchen with an eleventh attempt on a rack.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man at a counter with something that has not worked.

You are not insulting your mother, and that wrongness has never once been a message, it is where an eleventh attempt sits. I am not promising you the pastry comes right. 2 Timothy 1:5 says which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice, and it is the Holy Spirit rather than my saying it who takes a comparison out of a kitchen.

You have something that came down the line without a standard attached, and this is yours to keep: Paul traced it and did not grade it. The written word stops exactly where it stops in 2 Timothy 1:5, and the Spirit of God will not add a measurement to a sentence that has none.

And here is the word I actually came with.

You are able to make one of her things badly this week, and it has never been a failure of respect, it is a man in a kitchen doing the thing again. 2 Timothy 1:5 is where the line is traced, and His Spirit is saying it now, at a counter, over an eleventh attempt that did not come out.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Question of whether this insults her, you do not get settled. 2 Timothy 1:5 says which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, so by the Holy Spirit I make one of her things badly this week in the name of Jesus.
  2. Counter where I stand deciding, you are not a courtroom. The written word traces a thing down a family line with no comparison in the sentence, and by the Spirit of God I stop grading my hands against hers.
  3. Father, You had Paul name two women and then say in thee also, and also was never the same word as equally. Your word says which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, so by Your Spirit I get it wrong again this week, and I do not correct it, and You call that carried.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
