Creative Is A Type And I Was Not Issued It

Somebody described you once and it was accurate.

That is what makes this hard to unpick. It was not a slur and it was not wrong. It was a fair description of somebody who thinks before she speaks, who likes to know the plan, who is not the one at the table with the big idea and never has been.

Maybe it came in a result from one of those questionnaires. Maybe it came from a sister who said it warmly at a family thing. Either way, it landed, and it landed because it fit.

And then something happened to it over the years that nobody intended.

A description became a boundary.

It stopped saying here is what she is like and started saying here is what she does not do. And a thing you do not do quickly becomes a thing you cannot do, and a thing you cannot do eventually becomes a fact about the kind of person you are.

I want to point at the moment that turn happens, because I think it happens quietly to almost everybody and almost nobody catches it.

A description is a photograph of how somebody has been. It is a record.

A boundary is a claim about the future. It is a fence.

And nobody ever announced the change from one to the other. You did not agree to a fence. You agreed, at some point, with an accurate photograph.

As it hath pleased him

Paul is describing a body, and the reason he does it is that people were unhappy with the part they had been given.

But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him. (1 Corinthians 12:18, King James Version)

Hath God set the members every one of them.

Set is a deliberate word. Placed. Positioned. It is not describing an accident of temperament or a result somebody got from a questionnaire.

And as it hath pleased him. That is the phrase I want you to hold. The placing is an act of pleasure in God rather than an allocation of the leftovers.

You have been set somewhere on purpose and with pleasure, and 1 Corinthians 12:18 attributes the placing to God rather than to a type. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes a line written to people unhappy with their part and lays it down on a woman who has been outside a category for years.

And notice what is not in that verse. There is no fence anywhere in it. A member set in a body is not a member walled off from the rest of it, and the whole passage that follows is about the parts needing each other.

You are set rather than fenced, and it is already settled in the written word that the placing was pleasure and not restriction. His Spirit is the one who says that over a woman who has been reading a description as a boundary.

A description is not a prophecy

Now let me stay with the mechanism, because this is the useful part.

Everything the description says about you may be true. You may genuinely not be the one with the big idea. You may genuinely prefer the plan.

None of that says anything about whether you can spend twenty minutes making a thing.

You are set rather than sorted, and 1 Corinthians 12:18 says God hath set the members every one of them as it hath pleased him. The Holy Spirit is the one who tells a description apart from a fence.

That is the slippage. The description covers how you tend to be in a room with other people. It says nothing about what your hands are capable of on your own at a table on a Tuesday, because nobody was measuring that and no questionnaire has ever asked about it.

And this: what you make is not a measure of you, and it is certainly not a test of whether the description was accurate. A poor object on a Tuesday proves nothing about anybody's type.

You are not confined by an accurate description, and heaven has never once turned a record of how somebody has been into a rule about what they may do. 1 Corinthians 12:18 says God set them as it pleased him, and the Spirit of God is the one who separates a photograph from a fence.

And do not try to become the other type. Do not decide you will be the one with the big idea now. That accepts the whole framework and just tries to move you across it.

You have permission to cross a line without changing who you are, and this is yours: the setting in that verse was done with pleasure rather than as a limit. It is written in 1 Corinthians 12:18 that God hath set every one of them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a placing rather than a boundary.

Twenty minutes, and do the thing your type would not

So here is the ask, and it is one evening rather than a change of personality.

Tonight, make one thing that the description would say you do not do.

Something without a plan. Something where you do not know what it is going to be when you start. Twenty minutes with materials in front of you and no idea of the outcome.

You are set in the body by God rather than sorted into a type, and 1 Corinthians 12:18 puts the placing in His own pleasure. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes a delight the ground under an uncomfortable twenty minutes.

That will be genuinely uncomfortable, and the discomfort is not evidence that the description was right. It is what it feels like to do an unfamiliar thing.

You may find you hate it. Hating it is entirely allowed. What is not allowed tonight is deciding in advance that you cannot.

It will come out badly and formless and possibly not be anything at all. Leave it. Do not tidy it into a recognizable object at the end and do not throw it out.

You are covered while you work without a plan, and 1 Corinthians 12:18 is the ground under that. The written word puts the setting of the members in God's own pleasure, and the Spirit of God is present at a garden table with somebody who does not know what they are making.
