I Called My Own Rest Stealing

You have never said it out loud. I know that.

Nobody says this at a table. Nobody announces that they think of their own rest as a theft. But listen to the way it comes out sideways, and you will hear it.

I should not be sitting down.

I will do it when everything else is finished.

Let me do this one thing first.

And then there is the tell, the one that gives the whole thing away, which is what happens when somebody catches you sitting. You get up. Not because they asked. You get up because being seen at rest is being seen holding something that belongs to somebody else.

Two jobs. Both real. And people who depend on you in both places and at home, and a week that does not have slack in it anywhere. I am not going to pretend that is a scheduling problem with a clever answer.

But the guilt is a separate thing from the shortage, and it needs saying, because you have been treating them as the same thing.

The shortage is real. The theft is not.

Nobody in your life is short an hour because you sat down. Nobody's day got worse. There is no person, anywhere, holding a bill. You have been paying restitution on a debt that has no creditor and no amount, and a debt like that can never be settled, which is exactly why you have been at it for years.

There remaineth a rest

There is a sentence in Hebrews that I want said slowly, because the tense of it is the whole point.

The writer has been going back through the wilderness generation, and how they did not enter in, and how the promise is still open. And then this.

There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. (Hebrews 4:9, King James Version)

There remaineth. Present tense, standing, unclaimed, with your name on it.

It is not offered as a reward for the finished list. It is not conditional on the second job ending. It remaineth, which means it is sitting there now, while the list is exactly as long as it is tonight.

You have a rest that remains for you right now, and Hebrews 4:9 puts it in the present tense while the work is still unfinished. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes a sentence written to exhausted people and lays it down on a woman with two shifts this week.

And look at the second half. He that is entered into his rest hath ceased from his own works. Ceased. Not caught up. Not cleared the decks.

You are able to cease without having finished, and it is already settled in the written word that ceasing is the way in rather than the reward for getting through. His Spirit is the one who says that over a woman who has been trying to earn the entrance.

A debt with no creditor

Now let me stay on this, because this is where the freedom actually is.

Name the person. Go on, actually try. Who is the hour stolen from?

Your children? They would rather have you sitting down and present than moving and gone. Your employers? They bought specific hours and those hours are paid for and Thursday evening is not among them. God? He is the one who instituted a whole day of it and blessed the day.

You have a rest standing open in the present tense, and Hebrews 4:9 says there remaineth rather than there will be given. The Spirit of God is the one who keeps a tense from slipping into the future while a woman is reading it.

There is nobody there. The court is empty. The prosecutor, the defendant and the only witness have all been the same woman, and every sitting has gone against her.

And here is the other thing I want off you. What you would make in that twenty minutes is not a measure of you, and neither is what you get done in a week. A woman working two jobs does not need to justify her worth to anybody, and the making is not a productivity to be added to the pile.

You are not standing accused anywhere in heaven, and no charge of theft has ever once been filed against a person for resting. Hebrews 4:9 says the rest remains rather than saying it has to be earned, and the Spirit of God is the one who dismisses a case nobody brought.

And do not repay it afterward. That is the move I want to name. Sitting down and then working late to make up for it is not rest, it is a loan, and you have taken out plenty of those.

You have permission to take twenty minutes and settle nothing afterward, and this is yours: the rest that remains was never a loan. It is written in Hebrews 4:9 that he that is entered hath ceased, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes ceased mean ceased.

Twenty minutes, and no repayment

So here is the ask.

Tonight, take twenty minutes and make something. Anything with your hands. Use what is already in the house.

Do not do it after everything else is finished, because everything else is never finished, and that condition is how twenty minutes never arrives. Do it while something is still undone. That is deliberate.

And do not make it up. Do not stay up half an hour later. Do not do double tomorrow. Do not mention the sit down to anybody as though it were an absence to report.

What you make will be small and rough and probably useless. Leave it that way and do not tidy it into something respectable.

If somebody comes in while you are doing it, stay sitting. That is the hardest part of this whole article and I know it.

You are covered while somebody walks in and finds you sitting, and Hebrews 4:9 is the ground under that. The written word says the rest remaineth to the people of God in the present tense, and the Spirit of God is present at a table at nine at night with a woman who has not sat down in a year.
