An Hour That Makes NothingMatthew 6:26

My Father Said Idle Hands And I Still Hear It

This message is for the reader raised in a house where sitting down with nothing to show for it was a fault, who hears his father saying so every time he picks something up for pleasure

It is his voice, not yours.

That is worth saying at the start, because after enough years a borrowed sentence stops sounding borrowed. You hear it in your own head, in your own accent, and it feels like a conviction of your own.

Idle hands.

He would say it half joking, standing in a doorway, when he found you sitting. And you would get up. Everybody in that house got up. It was not a cruel household. There was food, there was laughter at that table, there was a great deal of love in it. And there was also a rule, unwritten and absolute, that a person who was not doing anything was a person to be moved along.

He came by it honestly. He worked the way men worked when the work was the difference between a family eating and not eating. In that house, in that decade, sitting down in the afternoon genuinely did cost something.

But you do not live in that decade. And the sentence has outlived the conditions that made it wise, which is what sayings do, and it is still standing in your doorway forty years later.

So you sit down with something in your hands for pleasure, and there he is, in the doorway. And you get up.

I want to honor the man and take the sentence off you, and I do not think those two things are in conflict. He would probably be horrified to know it was still doing this.

My Father Said Idle Hands And I Still Hear It

Behold the fowls of the air

Jesus is on a hillside talking about worry, and He does something that would have been startling to farming people, which is that He points at birds and calls them the argument.

Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? (Matthew 6:26, King James Version)

They sow not. Neither do they reap. Nor gather into barns.

Sowing, reaping, gathering. Those three are the whole agricultural year and they are the entire vocabulary of a productive life. And He picks out a creature that does none of the three and holds it up as the illustration of being cared for.

You are being pointed at a creature that does not sow, and Matthew 6:26 makes that creature the picture rather than the warning. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes an argument made on a hillside to anxious farmers and lays it down on a man standing in his father's doorway forty years on.

And then the question at the end. Are ye not much better than they. He is not comparing effort. He is comparing worth, and He settles it in one line without reference to output.

You have a worth that was settled without one mention of what you produce, and it is already settled in the written word by a question rather than by an argument. His Spirit is the one who asks that question over a man who has been answering a different one all his life.

Honor the man, retire the sentence

Now I want to be careful, because there are two wrong ways to do this and both of them cost something.

The first is to keep the sentence out of loyalty. To feel that letting it go would be a criticism of him, or a softness he did not have the luxury of. That is love doing something unhelpful, and it keeps a man tired for forty years.

The second is to turn on him. To decide he was harsh and that the saying was damage. That is not true either, and it takes a good man and makes him a case.

You are able to honor him and put the sentence down in the same evening, and Matthew 6:26 settles a person's worth with a question rather than with a total. The Holy Spirit is the one who holds both of those steady at once.

There is a third way and it is the honest one. He gave a sentence that fit his conditions. It has been kept long past those conditions. Both of those can be true, and neither of them makes him less than he was.

And what your hands produce in an evening is not a measure of you, and it never was, not even in his decade. He was not measuring you. He was moving a boy along in a house where the work did not wait.

You are not betraying him by putting it down, and heaven has never once asked a son to carry a saying past the season it belonged to. Matthew 6:26 sets the worth of a person on a different footing entirely, and the Spirit of God is the one who lets a man honor his father and retire a sentence in the same evening.

And do not argue it out with him in your head. That conversation cannot be won because the other party is not in it.

You have permission to sit down without a case prepared, and this is yours: the birds were not asked to justify a morning. It is written in Matthew 6:26 that your heavenly Father feedeth them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a settled provision rather than a pretty thought.

Twenty minutes, with the voice still going

So here is the ask, and there is a condition on it that matters.

Tonight, take twenty minutes and make something purely because you want to. Use what is already in the house. Whittle, sketch, tie something, work a piece of leather, whatever your hands go to.

He will arrive in the doorway. Probably in the first minute.

You are able to stay in the chair while he is standing there, and Matthew 6:26 is what makes the chair legitimate. They sow not, neither do they reap, says the written word, and the Holy Spirit is the one who holds a man in a seat with a voice going in the room.

Do not answer him. Do not explain that it was earned, do not list what got done today, do not promise to make up for it tomorrow. Explaining keeps him in the doorway, because a man who is being answered is a man who is still being consulted.

Stay in the chair with the voice going. That is the whole exercise.

What you make will be poor. Hands out of practice are poor hands. Leave it poor and do not fix it up before anybody sees it.

You are covered while the old voice is still speaking, and Matthew 6:26 is the ground under that. The written word holds up a creature that neither sows nor reaps and calls it fed, and the Spirit of God is present in a chair in a doorway that is not really there.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man who can hear a doorway from forty years ago.

You are not an idle man, and that saying has never once been the wisdom you have taken it for, whatever it was worth in the house it came from. I am not promising you the voice stops. Matthew 6:26 says behold the fowls of the air, for they sow not, neither do they reap, and it is the Holy Spirit rather than my reasoning who retires a sentence a good man handed on without meaning to.

You have a Father in heaven who feeds what does not gather, and this is yours to keep: the worth was decided by a question and not by a total. The written word settles it in Matthew 6:26, and the Spirit of God will not let it be reopened in a doorway.

And here is the word I actually came with tonight.

You are able to stay in the chair tonight, and it has never been idleness, it is a man in his own house with something in his hands on his own evening. Matthew 6:26 is where the birds are held up as the picture, and His Spirit is saying it now, at your table, with the voice still going and nobody standing in the door.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Saying I inherited about idle hands, you are not scripture. Matthew 6:26 says behold the fowls of the air, for they sow not, neither do they reap, so by the Holy Spirit I sit down for twenty minutes tonight in the name of Jesus.
  2. Doorway I still hear him standing in, you are empty. The written word settles a man's worth with a question and not with a total, and by the Spirit of God I honor my father and I put his sentence down.
  3. Father, You held up a creature that gathers nothing into barns and called it fed by You. Your word says are ye not much better than they, so by Your Spirit I make something poor tonight, and I answer nobody, and You call that rest.
