I Only Ever Show The Good Corner

There is a corner of it that came out right.

There always is. Even when the whole thing has gone badly, there is usually one bit, about the size of a hand, where the tension held or the line went where it should or the color did the thing you were hoping for.

And that is the bit in the photograph.

You did not plan this. The first time it was probably just framing. The light was better there, or the rest was not finished yet, and you took the picture of the good part because that was the part worth looking at.

But it became the method. Now, without thinking, you find the corner and you frame it and you send it, and what the other person sees is a small square of competence.

And here is the bit that sits with you afterward.

They say something kind. And the kind thing is about the square, and you know what is two inches outside the square, and so the kind thing does not land anywhere. It cannot. It was said about a photograph of something that does not exist at that quality.

So you get the compliment and you get no comfort, and the loneliness of that is quite particular. It is the loneliness of being liked for a crop.

I do not think this is vanity. I think it is protection, and I think it stopped working some time ago.

Made perfect in weakness

Paul asks God three times to take something away, and does not get what he asked for, and what he gets instead is a sentence that has kept a lot of people upright.

And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. (2 Corinthians 12:9, King James Version)

My strength is made perfect in weakness.

Not in spite of it. In it. The weakness is the place where the strength becomes visible, which means the weak part is not the bit to be cropped out, it is the bit where something else can be seen.

You are being shown a God whose strength appears in the weak part, and 2 Corinthians 12:9 puts it exactly there rather than around it. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes an answered prayer that did not go the way it was asked and lays it on a woman with a camera over a table.

And then Paul does something startling. He says he will glory in the infirmities. He goes to the weak part on purpose and points at it.

You have permission to point at the part that went wrong, and it is already settled in the written word that a man once did it gladly and on purpose. His Spirit is the one who says that over a woman who has been cropping for years.

The crop was protection

Now let me be fair to the cropping, because I do not want this heard as an accusation.

It started as protection and protection was reasonable. Showing the whole thing means somebody sees the whole thing, and if the whole thing is poor then a kind person has to find something to say, and everybody has been spared that. That is not vanity. That is consideration with a defensive move inside it.

But protection has a cost and the bill is due. Nobody has ever seen your work. Every compliment that has arrived in four years has been about a square inch. And when somebody genuinely admires a thing you made, it cannot be received, because the admiring was aimed at a crop.

And this: what is outside the frame is not a measure of you either. The bad tension, the wobble, the place where the color went muddy. None of that is a report on the woman. It is a report on a Tuesday.

You are not being protected by the crop any more, and heaven has never once required a person to present only the part that worked. 2 Corinthians 12:9 sends a man straight at his own weak place, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes that a strength rather than an exposure.

And do not swing to the other extreme. I am not asking you to lead with the flaw, or to caption it with an apology, or to explain what went wrong before anybody looks. That is the same anxiety facing the other way.

You have permission to show the whole thing flatly, and this is yours: the weak part is where the power was said to rest. It is written in 2 Corinthians 12:9 that the strength is made perfect in weakness, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that specific and not merely comforting.

The whole frame, once

So here is the ask, and it is one photograph.

Take one thing that came off your table. Photograph the whole of it, edge to edge, including the part that went wrong. Or if you would rather, hand the actual object to one person.

One person. Not an audience, not anything public. Somebody safe, which you already know the name of.

You have a weak place that God named as the site of His own strength, and 2 Corinthians 12:9 puts it there deliberately. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes an unedited frame a place where something else becomes visible.

And say nothing about the flaw. No apology, no explanation, no getting there first. If they mention it, that is fine, and you can say yes, that bit did not work. Flat. No self criticism attached.

That is the whole exercise and it will take about ninety seconds and it will be harder than the twenty minutes of making ever was.

Do not clean it up first. Do not fix the bad bit and then photograph it, and do not find better light for the poor side.

You are covered while the whole of it is in the frame, and 2 Corinthians 12:9 is the ground under that. The written word has a man glorying in the infirmity rather than trimming it out, and the Spirit of God is present in a garden with a phone and something imperfect on the table.
