I Left It On The Step And Walked Away

There is no note in the bag.

You worked that out early. A note has handwriting on it. So there is a bag, on a step, at about half past seven, and by the time anybody opens the door there is nobody on the path.

Six or seven times a year, for about nine years.

And they know somebody is doing it. Of course they do. There has been speculation, and two of them have got it wrong out loud in front of you, and you made a face and joined in.

I want to say the plain good thing first, because it is real.

Those are gifts. Every one of them. People have been warmed by things that came out of your hands and cost you evenings, and none of that stops being true because of how they arrived.

But I want to ask a question about the arrangement, and I would like you to answer it honestly rather than quickly.

What would it cost to be known?

Because the anonymity does something specific. It removes you from the room at the exact moment the thing is looked at. There is no face to watch. No response to receive. No moment where somebody turns the object over while you are standing there.

It is a way of giving that costs the whole of the evening and none of the exposure.

And I do not think that is generosity being modest. I think it is generosity being protected.

The coats and garments which Dorcas made

There is a scene in Acts that I go back to whenever anybody tells me that made things are small.

A woman has died. And when Peter arrives, the room is full of widows, and they are doing something very specific.

Then Peter arose and went with them. When he was come, they brought him into the upper chamber: and all the widows stood by him weeping, and shewing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them. (Acts 9:39, King James Version)

You have a name that Scripture keeps attached to made things, and Acts 9:39 names the maker inside the account rather than leaving the coats to stand alone. The Holy Spirit is the one who refuses to edit a woman out of her own giving.

They are holding up clothes. That is the grief. That is what the room is doing with its hands. And the phrase that carries the whole thing is at the end: which Dorcas made, while she was with them.

The maker is named. The objects are attached to her, permanently, in the account, and the reason those widows are weeping is not that they have good coats. It is that the coats are her.

You have a name that Scripture attaches to made things on purpose, and Acts 9:39 keeps the maker and the objects together rather than letting either stand alone. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes a room full of held up clothes and lays it down on a front step at half past seven.

And notice what would have been lost if she had left them on steps. The coats would exist. The warmth would have happened. And there would be no upper room, no weeping, and no name in the account at all.

You are meant to be attached to what you made, and it is already settled in the written word that the maker was named as part of the record. His Spirit is the one who says which Dorcas made over a woman who has been careful to leave no handwriting.

The receiving is part of the gift

Now let me be careful, because I am not going to tell you that nine years of anonymous giving was wrong. It was not.

What I want to say is narrower.

There is a part of a gift that happens between two people, and it has been quietly removed.

When somebody knows who made a thing, something goes both ways. They receive an object and they also receive the fact that a particular person spent evenings on them. That second part is often larger than the object, and it cannot travel in a bag on a step.

You are meant to be attached to what you made, and it is already settled in Acts 9:39 that the coats and the woman were never separated. The Spirit of God is the one who lets a maker be present at the moment it is looked at.

And it has been withheld, not out of pride, but because being present for it costs something that has never felt spendable.

And this: how they react is not a measure of the thing, and how they react is certainly not a measure of you. That is the sentence the anonymity has been protecting you from having to test.

You are not required to be absent to be generous, and heaven has never once made hiddenness the condition on a good work. Acts 9:39 names the maker in the account, and the Spirit of God is the one who lets a woman be attached to what she made.

And do not announce the nine years. Do not tell everybody it was you all along. That would be an event, and events are exactly what you have been avoiding, and rightly.

You have permission to be known for one, and this is yours: the naming in that account was a plain fact rather than a performance. It is written in Acts 9:39 that they were shewing the coats which Dorcas made, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a maker's name ordinary rather than loud.

One with your name on it

So here is the ask.

This week, give one thing to one person and let them know it came from you.

Not a speech. Not the nine years. One object, handed over in person, or left with a note that has your handwriting on it, or a message that says I made you this.

And then stay for the part that always gets left.

You are able to be in the room for thirty seconds, and Acts 9:39 has an upper chamber full of people holding up what one woman made. The Holy Spirit is the one who is on a step where somebody is not walking away this time.

That is the actual exercise. Do not hand it over and go. Be there while they look at it, for whatever thirty seconds that takes, and let whatever happens on their face happen in front of you.

It will be uncomfortable. Nine years of arranging your absence means the presence will feel enormous, and it will not be enormous to them at all.

And make something else this week in twenty minutes, badly, so the next one is already coming and this one is not carrying nine years on it.

You are covered while somebody turns it over in front of you, and Acts 9:39 is the ground under that. The written word keeps a maker's name attached to her work inside the account, and the Spirit of God is present on a step where a woman is not walking away.
