My Niece Does Not Think About It At All

She does not stop.

That is the thing you cannot get over. She sits down, she starts, and her hands keep moving for forty minutes. She does not hold it up. She does not lean back. She does not turn it around to see how it is going.

She narrates, a bit, but the narration is about the thing and not about her. This is the roof. This one is the mother one. That is not about whether she is any good at it.

And when it is finished she says it is finished, and it is objectively terrible, and she carries it off to show her mother without one flicker of doubt about whether it is worth showing.

You sit at the same table. And you cannot get within a mile of that.

Because you stop. Every ninety seconds you stop, you hold it up, you turn it, you look at it from where somebody else would be standing. And in that moment you are no longer making anything. You are inspecting.

And each inspection costs a small amount. Not much. But you do it forty times in an hour, and by the end of the hour something has drained out of you that she still has all of.

I want to name what she does not have, because it is not confidence. She is not confident. She has never considered the question. There is nobody standing behind her while she works.

That is the difference. Not skill, not attitude, not talent. Somewhere in the last thirty years, a watcher took up a position behind your shoulder, and she does not have one yet, and everything else follows from that.

Become as little children

The disciples ask a status question and get an answer that is not about status at all.

Who is the greatest in the kingdom. It is a reasonable question in their world and they are not being wicked. And He calls a child over and stands the child in the middle of them, which is already an answer before He says anything.

And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 18:3, King James Version)

Become as little children.

Not become silly, and not become naive. A child in that room was somebody with no standing to protect, nothing to defend, and no position to lose, and that is what He puts in the middle of a conversation about greatness.

You are being pointed at the very thing you have been watching across a table, and Matthew 18:3 puts it at the center rather than at the edge. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes an answer given to men arguing about rank and lays it on a man who cannot make anything without stopping to check it.

And notice that becoming as a child is described as something that happens to a person rather than a skill they acquire. Except ye be converted. It is turned, not achieved.

You have a turning available that is not a technique, and it is already settled in the written word that this is done to a person rather than by them. His Spirit is the one who says that over a man who has been trying to relax on purpose for years, which never works.

The watcher is not you

Now let me stay with the watcher, because getting the identity of it right changes what you do about it.

That voice that assesses every ninety seconds is not your judgment and it is not your standards. It is a posture. Somewhere back there, probably after somebody looked once while the work was still mid flight, a part of a man stepped outside and started watching from where the observer stood, and it has not moved since.

You are not a self critical man, and you were never one: there is somebody standing at your shoulder and that is a different thing entirely. Matthew 18:3 puts a child with nothing to defend in the middle of the room, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells a posture apart from a person.

That distinction matters because a posture cannot be argued out of a room, and arguing is what has been attempted for years. What can be done is not turning around to consult it.

And this: what she makes is not a measure of her and what you make is not a measure of you. Her terrible house and your careful thing are the same kind of object in the sight of God, which is to say, a thing somebody made.

You are not obliged to consult the watcher, and heaven has never once required a person to inspect their own work mid task. Matthew 18:3 sets a child with nothing to protect in the middle of the room, and the Spirit of God is the one who does the converting rather than leaving it to a man's effort.

And do not try to feel like a child. Do not aim at the ease she has, because aiming at ease is another form of watching yourself, and it will not arrive that way.

You have permission to work without checking, and this is yours: the child in the middle of the room was not doing anything to be there. It is written in Matthew 18:3 that ye must be converted, and the Holy Spirit is the one who turns a man rather than coaching him.

Twenty minutes, and do not hold it up

So here is the ask, and the whole exercise sits in one instruction.

Tonight, make something for twenty minutes with whatever is already in the house.

And do not hold it up. Not once. Do not lean back, do not turn it around, do not look at it from where somebody else would stand. Keep it flat on the table and keep your hands on it for the whole twenty minutes.

You are able to stay inside the work, and Matthew 18:3 puts a child with nothing to defend in the middle of a room about greatness. The Holy Spirit is the one who does the turning rather than leaving it to a man's own effort.

That will be very uncomfortable at about minute three. The pull to check will be strong and it will feel like carelessness not to. It is not carelessness. It is the first twenty minutes in years spent inside the work instead of outside it.

What comes out will be bad, and it will probably be worse than if you had checked. That is expected and it is fine. Leave it, and do not correct it after the time is up.

You are covered while you work without looking, and Matthew 18:3 is the ground under that. The written word puts a child with nothing to defend in the middle of a room about greatness, and the Spirit of God is present at a table where somebody is not turning around.
