I Am Not A Creative PersonGenesis 2:15

If It Is Not New Then It Is Nothing

This message is for the reader who holds making to a standard of bringing something into the world that was not there, and disqualifies everything he does under it

Everything you make already exists somewhere.

That is the objection, and it is not vague. You have thought about it properly, the way you think about most things, and you have arrived at a position.

Making, properly understood, is bringing into existence something that was not there. Creation. And by that measure, sanding a board is not creating anything, and neither is joining two pieces of wood that already existed into a shape that other people have made ten thousand times before.

You are not being falsely modest. You have set a bar and you are applying it honestly, and everything you do falls under it, and you have concluded that what you do is not making.

Now let me put one thing in front of you, and it is the second chapter of the Bible.

The first job given to a human being was not creating anything.

Man is put into a garden that already exists, containing plants he did not invent, in an arrangement he did not design, and the instruction is to dress it and to keep it.

Tend it. Look after it. Work it.

That is the original human work. Not making from nothing. Working on something that was already there.

If It Is Not New Then It Is Nothing

To dress it and to keep it

Here is the verse, and I want the plainness of it.

And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. (Genesis 2:15, King James Version)

To dress it and to keep it.

There is nothing in that sentence about originating anything. The garden was already planted. Every living thing in it was already made and named by somebody else. The man arrives into a finished creation and is given work inside it.

And that work is the first thing said about what a human being is for.

You are doing the original human work rather than falling short of it, and Genesis 2:15 puts a man into a garden he did not make and calls the tending his job. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes the second chapter of Scripture and lays it on a bench in a study where somebody has been holding an impossible bar.

And notice the verb. Dress. It is not a passive word. It means work applied to something, care taken over it, shaping and pruning and attending.

You have work that Scripture describes without one mention of originality, and it is already settled in the written word that the first job was tending rather than creating. His Spirit is the one who says that over a man who has been disqualifying himself with a standard nobody was ever given.

Only one being has ever met that bar

Now let me be precise, because precision is what you actually respect.

The definition is not wrong. It is accurate. Bringing something into existence out of nothing is a real category, and it is the highest one, and nobody meets it.

The error is in what got done with it.

A category belonging to God alone became the entry requirement for a man at a bench. And naturally nothing clears it. That is not a flaw in the work. That is the definition doing exactly what it should, which is describing something only God does.

You are doing the first work a human being was ever given, and Genesis 2:15 puts a man into a finished garden and calls the tending his job. The Spirit of God is the one who puts a standard back where it belongs and leaves a man on the ground.

The word for what human beings do is different, and Scripture uses it in the second chapter. Dress. Keep. Work.

And this: whether a thing has been made ten thousand times before is not a measure of you. A joint cut this evening is a joint that did not exist this morning, whatever has been cut elsewhere.

You are not falling short, and heaven has never once measured a man against a category reserved for God. Genesis 2:15 gives the man tending rather than creating, and the Spirit of God is the one who puts a standard back where it belongs.

And do not lower the bar. That is not what I am asking. Keep it exactly where it is, at the top, applying to one being, and stop standing under it yourself.

You have permission to work at the level Scripture actually assigns, and this is yours: the first commission was to dress and to keep. It is written in Genesis 2:15 that he was put into the garden for that, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes tending an office rather than a consolation.

Twenty minutes of tending

So here is the ask, and it is deliberately not making anything.

Tonight, spend twenty minutes tending something. Twenty minutes of dressing and keeping.

Sharpen a tool. Oil a handle. Sand a thing that is already made. Clean and true an old blade. Work on something that already exists and add nothing to it.

You are doing the first work a human being was ever given, and Genesis 2:15 puts a man into a finished garden and calls the tending his job. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a commission rather than a consolation prize.

That is the exercise. Not a shortcut to making, and not a consolation prize. Do the actual first human work, on purpose, and call it what Genesis calls it.

And here is the second half. When you finish, say that you did the work. Not that you pottered, not that you tidied up, not that you did not really do anything tonight.

It will not produce an object. There will be nothing new on the bench at the end of it, and everything in you will read that as a wasted evening. It is not. It is the exact thing a man was put in a garden to do.

You are covered while nothing new appears on that bench, and Genesis 2:15 is the ground under that. The written word gives the first human being work inside a creation he did not make, and the Spirit of God is present in a study where somebody is oiling a handle at nine at night.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man with an exact mind and an impossible bar.

You are not falling short of making, and that standard has never once been meant for you, it describes a thing only God has ever done. I am not asking you to lower it and I am not going to argue that a joint is a creation. Genesis 2:15 says the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it, and it is the Holy Spirit rather than my argument who puts a category back where it belongs.

You have the first human commission rather than a consolation, and this is yours to keep: it was given inside a garden that was already finished. The written word says so in Genesis 2:15, and the Spirit of God will not let a commission be read as a demotion.

And here is the word I actually came with tonight.

You are able to spend twenty minutes tending tonight and call that the work, and it has never been nothing, it is the first thing a man was ever given to do. Genesis 2:15 is where the dressing and the keeping are commanded, and His Spirit is saying it now, in your study, over a blade and an oiled cloth.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Standard that says it must be new, you are not from Scripture. Genesis 2:15 says the LORD God put the man into the garden to dress it and to keep it, so by the Holy Spirit I tend something for twenty minutes tonight and I call it the work, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Bar that belongs to God alone, you are not the entry requirement for a bench. The written word gives the first man a garden he did not plant and calls the tending his job, and by the Spirit of God I stop standing under a category reserved for the Almighty.
  3. Father, You put a man into a finished garden and gave him work inside it, and You never asked him to originate a thing. Your word says to dress it and to keep it, so by Your Spirit I oil a handle tonight and make nothing at all, and You call that the work.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
