None Of My Ideas Are Actually Mine

You could name every one of them.

That is what makes this uncomfortable rather than merely academic. It is not a vague sense that your ideas come from somewhere. It is that you know, specifically, whose.

The way you fold that came from Denise. The color thing came from a woman at church whose name you would rather not say. The whole approach to the edging is your aunt's and everybody in the family knows it is hers.

And so what sits in you is not a general philosophical worry about originality. It is a much smaller and more specific fear, and it is this.

One day, one of them is going to see it and recognize it.

And in that moment you will be a woman who has been quietly taking things from people who trusted her enough to show her.

Now I want to look at that picture properly, because I think it has never been examined and I think it falls apart the second it is.

Imagine Denise sees it.

What does she actually do? Does she go quiet? Does she say, that is my fold. Does she feel taken from?

Or does she say, oh, you did the fold. And then, almost certainly, ask how yours came out, because that is what a person who showed somebody a thing wants to know.

There is a version of this where you are stealing. It requires you to be hiding it. And the hiding is the only part that would make it theft.

Every good gift is from above

James writes a sentence about where anything good comes from, and the reach of it is the part I want.

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. (James 1:17, King James Version)

Every good gift is from above.

Every one. Including the fold that Denise showed you. Including the fold that Denise got from somebody else, who got it from a grandmother, who got it from a village, and the whole chain of it, all the way back, arrives from one place.

Nobody in that chain originated anything. Everybody in it received.

You are inside an economy where everything was received, and James 1:17 traces every good thing back past every human hand to one source. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes a sentence about the Father of lights and lays it on a woman worried about a fold.

And notice what that does to the idea of ownership. If Denise did not originate it either, then there is nothing to take from her. There is only a thing being passed along, which is what it was always doing.

You have received rather than taken, and it is already settled in the written word that everything good came down rather than starting anywhere in a person. His Spirit is the one who says that over a woman who has been rehearsing a conversation that will never go the way she fears.

The hiding is the only problem

Now let me be practical, because there is one real thing in this and it is worth naming.

The borrowing is fine. The hiding is not.

Not because hiding is wicked, but because it is what has turned an ordinary act of receiving into something that feels like a secret. And a thing kept secret grows in the dark. A low anxiety about a fold has been carried for years, and it exists entirely because nobody has been told.

You have received rather than taken, and it is already settled in James 1:17 that every good gift came down from one place. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes an ownership out of a chain where nobody was ever holding one.

And the fix is not to stop borrowing. It is to say where it came from.

That is a five word sentence. Denise showed me this fold. It costs nothing, it is true, and it converts the whole thing from something taken into something passed on, which is what it always was.

And this: whether an idea started with you is not a measure of you, and neither is how many of your ideas have somebody's name on them. Names on ideas are a sign of a woman who has been paying attention to people.

You are not a thief, and heaven has never once treated a received thing as a stolen one. James 1:17 puts every good gift under one origin, and the Spirit of God is the one who dissolves an ownership nobody had.

And do not go and ask permission. Do not ring Denise and make it a whole thing. That would make it heavier rather than lighter and it would embarrass both of you.

You have permission to use it and say where it came from, and this is yours: the passing on was always what was happening. It is written in James 1:17 that it cometh down from the Father of lights, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a chain of hands into a chain of receiving.

Twenty minutes, and say where it came from

So here is the ask, and there are two halves and the second one is the real one.

Tonight, make one thing for twenty minutes using somebody else's idea. Openly. The fold, the color thing, the edging, whichever one carries the most weight.

And then tell them where you got it.

You have received rather than taken, and James 1:17 traces every good gift past every human hand to one source. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes a chain of hands into a chain of receiving rather than a chain of debts.

Not a speech. Not an apology. A message, or the next time you see them, one sentence: I did your fold on something, it came out badly, thank you for showing me.

That is it. It will take nine seconds and it undoes years.

What you make will be poor, and it will be visibly a version of their thing rather than a match for it. Leave it that way. Do not improve it before anybody sees it and do not put it away.

You are covered while you use it openly and say so, and James 1:17 is the ground under that. The written word puts every good gift under one source and leaves nobody holding a claim, and the Spirit of God is present at a table where a woman is making a version of somebody else's thing without hiding.
