The Bag In The CupboardPsalm 90:17

The Ship Is Half Rigged On The Shelf

This message is for the reader with a model ship she started with her father, half rigged on a shelf, that she has stopped seeing because looking at it costs her something

There is a way of looking at a room that skips one thing in it.

You know the trick. Your eye goes along the shelf, along the books, along the lamp, and it steps over the ship the way a foot steps over a loose board. You did not decide to do that. You got good at it without practicing.

Half the rigging is on. The hull is done and the hull is good, and the masts are stepped, and the standing rigging is mostly there, and then it stops in the middle of a stage, the way a thing stops when somebody puts it down expecting to come back on Thursday.

He was better at it than you. He had the patience, and the little clamps, and the way of holding a thread against the light to see if it had twisted. You held things for him. Then you got older and you did some of it yourself, and this one was the one you were doing together.

And now the room has a ship in it that you have stopped seeing.

I am not going to hurry you past that. I have sat with a lot of people beside a lot of quiet objects, and the object is never the problem. The problem is that touching it turns the volume up on something you have been keeping low so that ordinary days can happen.

That is not avoidance. That is a person managing a load.

The Ship Is Half Rigged On The Shelf

Establish thou the work of our hands

There is a psalm attributed to Moses, and it is mostly about how short a life is. It is honest to the point of being uncomfortable. And then it ends, out of nowhere, with a request that is oddly practical.

And let the beauty of the LORD our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it. (Psalm 90:17, King James Version)

Establish the work of our hands. And then, in case anybody missed it, he says it again the other way round.

That repetition is not decoration. A man who has just spent sixteen verses on how quickly everything passes asks twice for the work of human hands to be made to stand. He is not asking for it to be finished. He is asking for it to hold.

You are asking a question that Scripture already answered, and Psalm 90:17 puts the establishing of a work of hands on God rather than on the one who began it. The Holy Spirit is the one who carries a prayer about mortality across three thousand years and sets it down beside a model on a shelf.

And notice whose hands. Our hands. Ordinary, unremarkable, temporary human hands, the kind that put a hull together on a kitchen table on a winter evening.

You have hands that Scripture prays over by name, and it is already settled that God is the one who makes their work stand. His Spirit is the one who says that over a woman who has been treating a shelf like a locked room.

It does not have to mean anything tonight

Here is where I want to be careful, because there is a well meaning version of this that would do harm.

Somebody will tell you that finishing the ship would be a beautiful tribute. That he would have wanted you to. That completing it would be a way of honoring him.

I am not saying any of that, and I want you to be free of all of it.

Because the moment the ship becomes a tribute, it becomes a thing you can fail at. And then the twenty minutes is not twenty minutes, it is a ceremony, and you have to be in the right state for a ceremony, and you are almost never in the right state, so it stays on the shelf for another two years.

You are released from every meaning tonight, and heaven has never once required a work of hands to be a monument first. Psalm 90:17 asks for the work to be established and never once asks what it stands for, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes ceremony off a table so that work can happen on it.

So do not decide what the ship is. Do not decide whether it is grief or memory or moving on. The quality of the rigging is not a measure of what he was to you, and neither is the speed of it.

You are able to put one line on without knowing what it means, and this is yours: a work of hands that stands for nothing still stands. It is written twice in Psalm 90:17 that God establishes it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is entirely comfortable with a woman who cannot explain herself tonight.

Twenty minutes, and one line

So here is the ask, and it is genuinely this small.

Take it down. Put it on the table under a lamp. Work on it for twenty minutes.

Do not survey it first. Do not check whether the threads have gone brittle or whether the glue has yellowed or whether the stage it stopped at can be remembered at all. Find one line that is obviously missing and put it on.

You are held while your hands go back to something they know, and Psalm 90:17 asks God to establish the work of ordinary hands twice over. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a prayer already answered over a lamp and a table.

It will not be his standard. Your hands are not his hands and were never going to be, and the tension will be wrong, and the line will sit at a slightly different angle from the ones beside it, and somebody who knows ships would see it.

Leave it. Do not take it off and do it again.

You are steadied while your hands shake over the first line, and Psalm 90:17 is the ground under that. Establish thou the work of our hands is written as a prayer rather than as a standard, and the Spirit of God is present in a front room at nine at night with a lamp on.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman who has been stepping over one shelf with her eyes for years.

You are not neglecting your father, and that ship has never once been the debt you have quietly turned it into. I am not promising you a finished ship and I am not asking for one. Psalm 90:17 says establish thou the work of our hands, twice, and it is the Holy Spirit rather than my sympathy who takes a debt off a woman nobody ever billed.

You have a work that God Himself is asked to establish, and this is yours to keep: the establishing was never your job. The written word puts that request on God in Psalm 90:17, and the Spirit of God will not let it be handed back to you as pressure.

And here is the word I actually came with tonight.

You are able to take it down tonight, and it has never been a monument, it is a hull and some thread and two people at a table one winter. Psalm 90:17 is where the work of our hands is prayed over, and His Spirit is saying it now, in a front room, over a shelf you have not looked at properly in a long time.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Ship on the shelf, you are not a debt I owe my father. Psalm 90:17 says establish thou the work of our hands, so by the Holy Spirit I take you down tonight and I put one line on in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear that touching it turns the volume up, you do not decide my evenings. The written word asks God twice to establish the work of ordinary hands, and by the Spirit of God I am done stepping over one shelf with my eyes.
  3. Father, You are the one asked to establish what our hands do, and Moses asked You twice. Your word says the work of our hands establish thou it, so by Your Spirit I rig one line badly tonight, and I decide nothing about what it means, and You call that established.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
