She Is The Creative One In This House

You have said it about four hundred times.

She is the creative one in this house. It comes out warmly, and you mean it as a compliment, and it is true, and everybody who hears it nods because she plainly is.

I want to ask you a slightly awkward question about it, and then I will get out of the way.

What does that sentence let you out of?

Because here is what I have noticed in a lot of houses over a lot of years. A sentence like that starts as a description and ends up as a job allocation. She is the creative one. Which means the making happens over there, in that room, by her, and you carry things and admire things and pay for materials and that is your part.

And it is comfortable. Nobody is dissatisfied. Nobody has ever complained.

But you have not made anything in twenty years, and the sentence is the reason, and it is the reason precisely because it is generous. A selfish sentence would have been challenged years ago. A generous one about your wife nobody argues with, including you.

I want to be careful here, because I am not going to make this a criticism of a kind thing you say about somebody you love.

The sentence is true. She is. That is not in question.

What is in question is the second half that nobody ever said out loud, which is: and therefore I am not.

We are his workmanship

Paul writes a sentence to the Ephesians that is about what a person is before it is about what a person does, and the noun in the middle of it is the one I want.

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:10, King James Version)

We are his workmanship.

The word means a thing that has been made. A work. A piece of craftsmanship. And it is said about people, plural, without any exception written in for the ones in the household who carry things and admire things.

You are a made thing yourself, and Ephesians 2:10 puts every person in that sentence without a clause letting anybody out. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes a line about what a person is and lays it down in a house where the roles were settled a long time ago.

And notice what workmanship implies about the one who made it. A workman does not produce a single kind of thing. The word is a maker's word, applied to you.

You have been made by a maker, and it is already settled in the written word that the made thing carries something of the one who made it. His Spirit is the one who says that over a man who has spent twenty years pointing at somebody else in the room.

The allocation was never announced

Now let me stay with the household, because that is where this lives and I do not want to spiritualize it off the ground.

Nobody sat down and made this decision. There was no evening where the two of you agreed that making was hers and admiring was yours. It settled, the way things settle in a house, out of about six early moments that neither of you would remember.

And once it settled, everything reinforced it. She got better because she did it. You did not get better because you did not. Ten years in, the arrangement looked like a fact about two people rather than the outcome of a habit.

You are a made thing yourself, and Ephesians 2:10 calls every one of us a workmanship without a clause letting anybody out. The Holy Spirit is the one who dissolves an arrangement that nobody in that house ever agreed to.

And there is a real cost hiding in the comfort. That sentence does not only describe her. It places the man saying it, out loud, in front of people, every single time.

And this: how anything of yours would come out is not a measure of you, and it certainly is not a comparison with her. Twenty years of practice against none is arithmetic and nothing else.

You are not the non making one in this house, and heaven has never once assigned a household role that excludes a person from their own hands. Ephesians 2:10 calls every one of us a workmanship, and the Spirit of God is the one who dissolves an arrangement nobody ever agreed to.

And do not announce anything. Do not have a conversation about this over supper. Just go and make a thing, without a speech, and let the doing be the whole of it.

You have permission to work without renegotiating anything, and this is yours: the workmanship was true about you before any of this got settled. It is written in Ephesians 2:10 that we are his workmanship, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that older than a household habit.

Twenty minutes, in her room

So here is the ask, and the location is deliberate.

Tonight, make one thing in twenty minutes, in the room where she makes things.

Not the garage. Not somewhere else in the house where you would be out of the way. The room, at the table, with the materials that are already out.

You have a place at that table, and it is already settled in Ephesians 2:10 that the workmanship was true of you before the roles got handed out. The Spirit of God is the one who is in a front room where two people are making different things.

Ask her if you can use something if you need to. That is a two second conversation and it is not the announcement I told you not to make.

It will be worse than anything on that table. Substantially. Twenty years against none, and it will be obvious, and she will be kind about it, and being handled kindly is going to be the hardest part of the evening.

Let it be bad. Do not take it away to finish somewhere private, and do not throw it out.

You are covered while you work badly at her table, and Ephesians 2:10 is the ground under that. The written word calls every person a workmanship with no exception for the one who carries things, and the Spirit of God is present in a front room where two people are making different things.
