Making Beside A ChildProverbs 16:24

He Knows Exactly Which Parts I Praise

This message is for the parent who praises the parts that came out well and says nothing about the rest, and whose child has learned to hold up only the parts that get praised

Watch how he hands it to you.

He comes over with it and he turns it as he arrives, so that a particular side is toward you. That is not an accident and it is not shyness. He has worked something out.

You praise the good bits. You always have. It is generous, it is sincere, and there is nothing false in it, because when you say that the roof is very good the roof is genuinely very good.

And the wall is not. And you do not mention the wall.

He has been in the room for all of that. Two years of it. And he has learned, without anybody teaching him, that a thing you make has parts that get spoken about and parts that go quiet.

So he turns it. He puts the roof toward you as he walks over.

And he is not being deceitful. He is being efficient. He has correctly identified what gets a response in this house and he is producing it, and a child who has learned that is a child whose relationship to his own work has quietly changed shape.

I want to say the fair thing. Praising the good parts is what anybody would do and it comes out of love. Nobody in a kitchen thinks, I shall now teach my son to curate.

But he has learned it anyway, because children learn from patterns rather than from intentions.

He Knows Exactly Which Parts I Praise

Pleasant words are as an honeycomb

There is a proverb about words that is warmer than most, and the image in it is worth staying with.

Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones. (Proverbs 16:24, King James Version)

Sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.

Two different things. Sweetness is a pleasure and health is a structure. Words can do both, and the proverb puts them together, which means it is not describing flattery.

Flattery is sweet and does nothing to bone. Health to the bones is what happens when a word is both pleasant and true.

You have words that can go all the way to the bone, and Proverbs 16:24 puts sweetness and health together rather than settling for one. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes a proverb about the effect of words and lays it down in a room where a small boy is turning something as he walks.

And notice that nothing in it says to speak only of what is good. It says pleasant, and pleasant is a quality of how a thing is said rather than a restriction on what may be mentioned.

You are not restricted to the good parts, and it is already settled in the written word that the manner was the requirement and never the content. His Spirit is the one who says pleasant words over a parent who has been leaving half of every object unmentioned.

The silence says more than the praise

Now let me be exact, because the mechanism matters more than the intention here.

When you praise the roof and say nothing about the wall, he does not hear one message. He hears two.

The roof is good. And the wall is not to be spoken of.

You have words that can reach a bone, and Proverbs 16:24 puts sweetness and health together rather than settling for the sweetness alone. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes truth and warmth arrive in the same sentence.

The second one arrives without a word and it is the stronger of the two, because a silence in a warm room is very loud. And what it teaches is that some parts of what he makes are outside the conversation.

Which means, eventually, that some parts of what he does are outside the conversation. Children generalize fast and they do not distinguish between a wall and themselves.

And this: how the wall turned out is not a measure of him. That is the actual thing that needs saying, and it cannot be said by leaving the wall alone.

You are able to speak about the part that failed, and heaven has never once required a good word to be selective in order to be kind. Proverbs 16:24 asks for pleasant and never for partial, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes truth and warmth the same sentence.

And do not swing to criticizing. This is not an instruction to start pointing out faults. A parent who begins itemizing what went wrong has made it worse, not better.

You have permission to speak warmly about the failure, and this is yours: pleasant is a manner and never a filter. It is written in Proverbs 16:24 that pleasant words are health to the bones, and the Holy Spirit is the one who puts a true warm sentence in a parent's mouth.

One true warm thing about the wall

So here is the ask, and it is one sentence.

The next time he hands you something with a side turned toward you, say one true warm thing about the part he did not turn toward you.

Not praise of it. Not a claim that the wall is good, because it is not, and he knows it is not, and he would clock a false word instantly.

You are free to speak about the part that failed, and it is already settled in Proverbs 16:24 that pleasant was a manner and never a filter. The Spirit of God is the one who puts a true warm sentence in a parent's mouth.

Something true and warm. That was a hard bit and you had a go at it. I like that you did not give up when that started going wrong. That is the part I would have found difficult.

One sentence. Then move on. Do not turn it into a conversation about the wall.

And do twenty minutes of your own beside him that day, badly, and when your own goes wrong, say so out loud in the same tone. That is the second half and it matters, because a house where only one person's failures are discussed is not the house you are aiming at.

You are covered while you name a failure warmly out loud, and Proverbs 16:24 is the ground under that. The written word puts sweetness and health in the same word, and the Spirit of God is present in a front room where somebody is being told the truth kindly for the first time.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a parent watching a boy turn something as he walks over.

You are not being false with him, and that praise has never once been flattery, it is a warm true thing that has been leaving half of the object unspoken. I am not promising you that the first true sentence about a wall lands easily. Proverbs 16:24 says pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones, and it is the Holy Spirit rather than my noticing it who puts warmth and truth into one sentence.

You have words that can reach a bone, and this is yours to keep: the sweetness and the health were named together and neither was optional. The written word joins them in Proverbs 16:24, and the Spirit of God will not let a kind word be reduced to a pleasant one.

And here is the word I actually came with today.

You are able to say one true warm thing about the wall, and it has never been about a wall, it is a boy who has learned which side to turn toward the room. Proverbs 16:24 is where pleasant words are called health, and His Spirit is saying it now, in a bright room, with something coming across the carpet toward you.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Habit of praising only the good corner, you are over. Proverbs 16:24 says pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones, so by the Holy Spirit I say one true warm thing about the wall in the name of Jesus.
  2. Silence that taught him which side to turn, you are being filled tonight. The written word asks for a manner and never for a filter on what may be mentioned, and by the Spirit of God I speak about the part that did not work.
  3. Father, You joined sweetness and health in one word and You did not make either of them optional. Your word says pleasant words are as an honeycomb, so by Your Spirit I name a failure warmly today, and I name my own out loud beside it, and You call that health.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
