I Moved It So The Photograph Would Look Right

You moved two pieces. That was all.

The tall one had fallen sideways and you stood it up. And the small green one was behind the others where it did not show, so you brought it forward, and then you took the picture and it looked lovely and everybody said so.

And she was standing next to you when you did it.

She did not say anything. She is seven. She watched your hand go in and move the tall one and she looked at the arrangement and then she looked at you, and then she went off to do something else.

You have thought about that look about forty times since.

I want to name what she was doing in that half second, because I think you already know and have not put words on it.

She was working out which version was the real one.

Because up to the moment your hand went in, the thing on the table was what she had made. And after your hand went in, the thing on the table was a slightly better arrangement, and the picture that went to her grandmother is of that one.

So the version that went out, the one that got the responses and the love hearts and the phone calls, is not the one she built.

And she knows. Not in words. But she was standing right there.

He that is least among you all

There is a moment where the disciples are arguing about who is the greatest, and Jesus answers with a child rather than with a sentence.

He sets a child by Him. Not in front of them as an illustration to be discussed. Beside Him.

And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great. (Luke 9:48, King James Version)

Whosoever shall receive this child.

Receive. Take, accept, welcome as they come. It is a word about accepting something as it arrives rather than about improving it.

And the child in that scene was a small unimpressive person in a room full of men arguing about status. He is the least in the room by every measure anybody there was using.

You are being asked to receive a small person as they come, and Luke 9:48 puts the receiving of a child beside the receiving of Christ Himself. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes a moment about status and lays it down on a phone held over a kitchen table.

And notice what receiving is not. It is not curating. It is not presenting somebody's best angle. It is taking what is handed over.

You have permission to receive rather than to improve, and it is already settled in the written word that the taking as it comes is what was asked. His Spirit is the one who says receive this child over a woman with a phone in her hand.

The picture is where it counts

Now let me be practical, because the photograph is a small thing and it is also exactly where this lives now.

It is not the rearranging of an object. Nobody in history was harmed by a green piece being moved forward two inches.

It is that the photograph is how her work reaches everybody who is not in the room. Her grandmother, the aunt in another state, the family group that lights up with responses. That picture is the version that exists for everybody else, and it is now the version with your hand in it.

You are asked to receive rather than to arrange, and Luke 9:48 puts the receiving of a child beside the receiving of Christ Himself. The Holy Spirit is the one who keeps curating out of a word that only ever meant taking as it comes.

And what she is learning is that the thing she made needs adjusting before it can go out. Not that it is bad. That it is not quite sendable as it stands.

And this: how good the arrangement looks is not a measure of her, and how the picture performs is not a measure of you. Nobody in that family group is grading anything.

You are not improving anything by moving it, and heaven has never once required a child's work to be arranged before it was received. Luke 9:48 says receive this child, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes curating out of a woman's hands.

And do not confess it to her. Do not say you are sorry for moving the tall one. She is seven and an apology would make it much larger than it is.

You have permission to stop and say nothing about it, and this is yours: the receiving in that verse has no adjusting anywhere in it. It is written in Luke 9:48 that whosoever shall receive this child receiveth me, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes as it comes the whole of the instruction.

Photograph exactly what she made

So here is the ask, and it is one photograph.

The next time she makes something and it is going to be sent to anybody, photograph it exactly as she left it.

Tall one sideways. Green one hidden at the back. Whatever the state of it is at the moment she says it is finished.

You have a child whose worth was settled by being stood beside Christ, and it is already settled in Luke 9:48 that receiving her is receiving Him. The Spirit of God is the one who makes an unarranged picture the honest one.

Do not move a piece. Do not straighten the paper underneath. Do not take four and choose the best angle, which is the more sophisticated version of the same instinct. One picture, from wherever you happen to be standing, of what is actually on the table.

And send that one.

It will look worse than the ones you usually send, and somebody will probably say something enthusiastic anyway, because people are kind about children and always have been.

And do twenty minutes at that table with her afterwards, making something of your own, badly, so there is a second wonky object in the room.

You are covered while an unarranged picture goes out to everybody, and Luke 9:48 is the ground under that. The written word puts the receiving of a small person beside the receiving of Christ, and the Spirit of God is present at a table where a phone is being held over exactly what a child made.
