Making Beside A ChildPhilippians 2:3

I Made A Better One Next To His

This message is for the parent who does not take over, and instead makes his own version alongside, which the child can see and compare and lose to

You never touch his.

That is your rule and you keep it. Whatever he is making is his, and your hands stay on your side of the table, and you have been quietly proud of that for years because you have watched other fathers reach across and you do not.

What you do instead is make your own.

The same thing. At the same time. Beside him.

And yours comes out well, because you are forty six and he is nine, and by the end of the afternoon there are two of the same object on that table and one of them is obviously better.

And you have never once put your hand on his. That is true. And I want you to look at what is on the table anyway.

Here is the thing about a comparison that nobody had to say out loud.

If you had taken over, he could be annoyed with you. There would be something to push against. A boy whose father grabs the thing can feel wronged, and feeling wronged is a position a person can stand in.

There is nothing to push against here. Nobody did anything to him. He looked across the table, and that was all.

And what he saw was what the thing is supposed to look like, made by somebody he admires, four feet away, while his own was still in his hands.

I Made A Better One Next To His

In lowliness of mind let each esteem other better

Paul writes a line to a church about how to be in a room together, and the phrase is stronger than people usually take it.

Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. (Philippians 2:3, King James Version)

Esteem other better than themselves.

That is not a suggestion to be modest about it. It is an instruction about where a person places somebody else, and the word better is not softened anywhere in the sentence.

And the thing to notice is that it says nothing about accuracy. Paul is not asking a room full of people to each privately calculate who is genuinely superior. He is describing a posture that a person takes on purpose.

You are being asked for a posture rather than for an assessment, and Philippians 2:3 puts the esteeming of another above the truth of the comparison. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes an instruction about a church room and lays it down on a long table with two of the same object on it.

And notice the two things it opens against. Strife and vainglory. Vainglory is a wanting to be seen well, and it is very often present in a man doing something perfectly innocent alongside somebody he loves.

You have permission to place him above yourself on purpose, and it is already settled in the written word that the placing was never a matter of who is actually better. His Spirit is the one who says esteem other better over a man who has kept his hands entirely to himself.

Nothing was done and something happened

Now let me stay with the difficulty, because this is a genuinely hard one and I am not going to pretend it is simple.

Nothing wrong has been done. There is no act to point at. A man made a thing at a table, which is what this whole site exists to get people doing.

And a nine year old spent an afternoon beside a demonstration.

You are able to place him above yourself on purpose, and Philippians 2:3 asks for a posture rather than an accurate ranking. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes lowliness of mind something a competent man can do with his own two hands.

Both of those are true and they do not cancel. The absence of an act does not mean the absence of an effect, and a boy does not need anybody to say a word in order to draw a conclusion from two objects on a table.

And this: how yours comes out is not a measure of you, and how his comes out is not a measure of him. That is exactly the sentence that is not getting through, and a finished pair of objects says it far louder than any encouragement you could offer.

You are not obliged to demonstrate anything, and heaven has never once asked a father to show a child what good looks like. Philippians 2:3 asks for lowliness of mind rather than for an example, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a demonstration off a table.

And do not stop making things beside him. That would be the wrong fix. A father sitting with empty hands watching a boy work is worse, and he would feel watched.

You have permission to be visibly worse than a nine year old, and this is yours: the esteeming was a posture and not a report. It is written in Philippians 2:3 to esteem other better than themselves, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a man's own hands available for that.

Twenty minutes, and make yours worse

So here is the ask, and it will cost you something.

This week, sit at that table with him for twenty minutes and make the same thing.

And make yours worse than his. On purpose.

Not comically. Do not perform it, because he is nine and not stupid and he would see a performance immediately. Work with your wrong hand. Do it fast without measuring. Choose the awkward material and let it fight you.

You are able to come down on purpose, and Philippians 2:3 asks for a posture rather than for an honest calculation of who is better. The Spirit of God is the one who makes lowliness of mind a thing a competent man can actually do with his hands.

Make it genuinely poor, in a way you could defend if he asked, which he might.

And when it is finished, put it on the table beside his and leave it there. Do not fix it afterward and do not throw it away when he goes to bed.

That is the whole exercise. For the first time in his life he will look across and see something worse than his own, made by you.

You are covered while a nine year old outdoes you at a table, and Philippians 2:3 is the ground under that. The written word asks for the other to be placed above regardless of the arithmetic, and the Spirit of God is present under a tree where a man is making a bad one on purpose.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man who has kept his hands to himself for years.

You are not doing anything wrong at that table, and that rule has never once been the whole answer, because nothing had to be done for something to happen. I am not promising you that making a bad one is comfortable. Philippians 2:3 says in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves, and it is the Holy Spirit rather than my noticing it who gets a competent man to come down on purpose.

You have an instruction about posture rather than about accuracy, and this is yours to keep: the placing of another above was never a calculation. The written word gives it that way in Philippians 2:3, and the Spirit of God will not turn a posture into a report.

And here is the word I actually came with.

You are able to make a worse one this week and leave it on the table, and it has never been about reaching across, it is a boy who looked over and drew a conclusion. Philippians 2:3 is where the esteeming is commanded, and His Spirit is saying it now, under the tree, with two of the same thing on the table.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Better version sitting beside his, you are going away this week. Philippians 2:3 says in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves, so by the Holy Spirit I make mine worse than his and leave it on the table in the name of Jesus.
  2. Rule that I never touch his work, you were true and you were not the whole answer. The written word asks for a posture rather than for an accurate assessment of who is better, and by the Spirit of God I come down on purpose beside a nine year old.
  3. Father, You asked for lowliness of mind and You never once made it depend on who was actually superior. Your word says esteem other better than themselves, so by Your Spirit I make a genuinely poor one this week, and I leave it beside his, and You call that lowliness.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
