There Was No Reaction At All

Six weeks. That is what it took.

You made it over six weeks of evenings, and about halfway through you knew who it was for, and the last two weeks you were making it for him rather than merely making it.

And you gave it to him, and he said thanks, and put it on the side.

That is the whole of it. There was no unkindness in it. He was not dismissive. He said thanks in the ordinary way a person says thanks, and then the conversation went on to something else, and about an hour later you went home.

And you have not given anybody anything you made in eleven years.

I want to be careful with this, because there is a version of this conversation that would make you sound needy, and that is not what happened and it is not what you are.

What happened is this. You put six weeks into a thing and handed it over, and the moment it left your hands you had no way of knowing whether any of it had registered. And nothing came back to tell you. So the six weeks went into a silence, and the silence has been sitting there ever since with nothing to fill it.

That is not neediness. That is a man who made something and never found out.

And here is the part I would ask you to hold, because it is the honest one. He may have been delighted. He may have it still. He may have shown it to two people that week and never mentioned it to you, because that is how most people are about most things.

You do not know. And not knowing is the actual injury, rather than anything he did.

Where are the nine

There is a moment where Jesus heals ten men and one comes back, and He says something out loud that people usually rush past.

And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? (Luke 17:17, King James Version)

Where are the nine.

He notices. That is the thing worth sitting with. The Son of God gives ten men something enormous, nine of them do not come back, and He says so, out loud, in front of people.

He is not sulking. There is no bitterness in it. But He names the absence rather than pretending it does not exist.

You are permitted to notice that nothing came back, and Luke 17:17 has Christ Himself saying it out loud rather than swallowing it. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes a question asked on a road and lays it down on a man who has not given anything away in eleven years.

And notice what He does next. Nothing. He does not go after the nine. He does not stop healing people. The next chapter has Him doing exactly what He was doing before.

You have permission to name it and keep going, and it is already settled in the written word that the noticing and the continuing sit in the same account. His Spirit is the one who says where are the nine over a man who has been quiet about it for a decade.

The response was never the payment

Now let me get at what has actually stopped you, because it is not a decision you made.

Somewhere in the weeks after, without any deliberation, the sum was done. Six weeks in, nothing out. And a man who has done that sum once does not do it again with his eyes open.

But look at what the sum assumes. It assumes the response was the return on the six weeks. That the making was an investment and the reaction was the payment, and the payment did not arrive.

You were never owed a payment, and Luke 17:17 has Christ noticing an absence and going straight on with what He was doing. The Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a gift from being filed as an unpaid invoice.

The six weeks were not an investment. They were six weeks of evenings you enjoyed, working on something with your hands, which is the whole of what this site exists to defend.

The giving was a separate act on top of that. And a gift, by definition, comes with no return attached, which is exactly what makes it a gift rather than a trade.

And this: how he responded is not a measure of the thing, and it is certainly not a measure of you. It is a fact about a Tuesday and about a man who is not demonstrative.

You were never owed a response, and heaven has never once made a reaction the settlement on a work of hands. Luke 17:17 notices the absence and moves on without collecting, and the Spirit of God is the one who keeps a gift from being filed as an unpaid invoice.

And do not give it to somebody who will react well. That is the fix that suggests itself and it is a trade with better odds.

You have permission to give with nothing expected back, and this is yours: Christ named the silence and kept doing exactly what He was doing. It is written in Luke 17:17 that He asked where the nine were, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a man ask it and carry on.

Give one away this week

So here is the ask, and there is a hard edge on it.

This week, give one thing you made to one person.

Any thing. It does not have to be six weeks of work, and I would rather it was not. Something small you can make in twenty minutes and hand over on Thursday.

And expect nothing.

You are not owed a response, and Luke 17:17 has Christ naming an absence out loud and then going straight on with what He was doing. The Holy Spirit is the one who lets a man mind it and keep giving in the same week.

That is the actual exercise. Not the giving, which has never been the difficult part. Deciding in advance that whatever comes back is fine, including nothing, and going ahead anyway.

If they say thanks and put it on the side, that is a complete outcome and the week has gone correctly.

Do not follow it up. Do not ask a week later whether they still have it. Do not mention it again at all.
