Making After A LossEcclesiastes 3:7

I Am Using My Brother Tools

This message is for the reader working with her dead brother tools, who feels like a thief every time she picks one up and has not told anybody that she uses them

They still have his handwriting on the handles.

Initials, mostly, done with a hot wire the way he did everything, slightly wonky. And a couple of them have tape on where the varnish had gone and he never got round to fixing it properly.

You have been using them for about a year.

Nobody objected. Nobody would. Your sister in law told you to take whatever you wanted and meant it, and the box came home in the car, and it has been in your workshop ever since.

And every single time you pick one of them up, there is a small wrong feeling.

Not grief exactly. Grief is a different thing and you know what that feels like. This one is more specific and more like being caught. It is the feeling of using something that belongs to somebody else while they are out of the room.

And on top of it there is a second layer, which is that you have not told anybody you use them. Not your sister in law. Not your own family. If somebody came into the workshop and picked one up and saw the initials you would feel your face change.

That is the actual state of it, and I want to name it plainly before we go anywhere.

You are not a thief. But you have been living for a year as though you are one, and it has quietly turned every good hour in that workshop into a slightly furtive one.

I Am Using My Brother Tools

A time to rend, and a time to sew

There is a stretch in Ecclesiastes that lists opposites, and one of the pairs is about cloth and it is the one I want.

A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak: (Ecclesiastes 3:7, King James Version)

A time to rend, and a time to sew.

Rending is the old sign of grief. Tearing the cloth. And in that same list, in the very same breath, is sewing, which is what a person does with cloth in the ordinary run of a life.

The passage does not put them in separate categories. It does not say there is a season for grief and then, afterward, a season for living. It sets them side by side as two things that both belong.

You are allowed to be sewing and rending in the same season, and Ecclesiastes 3:7 puts them in one breath rather than one after the other. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes an old list of opposites and lays it down on a workbench with somebody else's initials burned into the handles.

And notice the second pair in that same verse. A time to keep silence, and a time to speak. There is a permitted silence in Scripture, which matters for a woman who has told nobody.

You have a silence that Scripture itself makes room for, and it is already settled in the written word that not speaking is one of the times rather than a failure to be honest. His Spirit is the one who says that over a woman who has been quietly bracing for somebody to walk in.

Tools are for using

Now let me put the plainest thing I have on the table.

A tool that is not being used is not being preserved. It is being stored. Steel that sits still goes off in its own way, and the handle dries, and the edge does nothing.

Your brother did not keep those things as a collection. He kept them sharp because he used them. Everything about that box, including the tape and the initials, is the equipment of a man who worked.

The most respectful thing that can happen to a working tool is that somebody works with it.

And this: how well you use them is not a measure of your love for him, and it is not a measure of anything. If you are worse with his chisel than he was, that is arithmetic about practice, not a comment on whether you deserve to be holding it.

You are not taking anything from anybody, and heaven has never once counted the using of a dead man's tools as a theft. Ecclesiastes 3:7 sets rending and sewing side by side without ranking them, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes an accusation off a woman that nobody made.

And here is a practical piece. Consider telling one person. Not everybody, not a speech. One person, so that the workshop stops being a place where something is being hidden.

You have permission to be seen holding his chisel, and this is yours: the silence was allowed and so is the speaking. It is written in Ecclesiastes 3:7 that there is a time to speak, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells a woman which of those times she is in.

Twenty minutes, and put it back

So here is the ask, and there is a small ritual on the end of it that matters more than the work.

This week, take one of his tools and use it for twenty minutes. The one you like best, and the one that has been handled most carefully.

Use it properly. Not gently, not tentatively. Put it into the work the way it was made to go into the work, and let it get dull, and let it get marked.

You are able to let a good tool get marked, and Ecclesiastes 3:7 puts the sewing beside the rending in one breath with no order between them. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes an ordinary working evening legitimate inside a season of grief.

Then clean it and put it back where he kept it in the roll.

That last part is the piece I actually want. Not because the tool needs it, but because putting it back where it lives is the act of somebody who belongs in that workshop rather than somebody borrowing on the quiet.

What you make will be poor and that is not the subject. Leave it as it is and do not go back over it.

You are steadied with his handle in your hand, and Ecclesiastes 3:7 is the ground under that. The written word makes room for sewing inside the same season as the rending, and the Spirit of God is present in a workshop where somebody is not being furtive for once.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman standing in front of an open tool roll.

You are not stealing from your brother, and that feeling has never once been a conscience, it is the feeling of having done nothing wrong in a room where somebody is missing. I am not promising you the feeling stops the first time. Ecclesiastes 3:7 says a time to rend, and a time to sew, and it is the Holy Spirit rather than my saying so who takes an accusation off a woman nobody has accused.

You have a season with both things in it at once, and this is yours to keep: Scripture set the rending and the sewing in one breath. The written word gives them side by side in Ecclesiastes 3:7, and the Spirit of God will not separate them out into a schedule.

And here is the word I actually came with.

You are able to use his chisel properly this week, and it has never been a borrowing, it is a workshop and a tool roll and your own two hands. Ecclesiastes 3:7 is where the sewing sits beside the rending, and His Spirit is saying it now, over a bench, with his initials still burned into the wood.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Feeling that I am stealing from him, you are not true. Ecclesiastes 3:7 says a time to rend, and a time to sew, so by the Holy Spirit I take up his chisel this week and I use it properly in the name of Jesus.
  2. Furtiveness in that workshop, you are over. The written word makes room for a silence and for a speaking, and by the Spirit of God I put his tool back in the roll where it lives, as somebody who belongs there.
  3. Father, You set the tearing and the sewing side by side in one breath and You did not rank them. Your word says a time to rend, and a time to sew, so by Your Spirit I work badly with his tools this week, and I let them get marked, and You call that belonging.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
